Happy Heroes Day

The Zimbabwe Institute of Diplomacy joins Zimbabweans across the  country and abroad in commemorating the National Heroes Day. It is undeniable that we are celebrating the National Heroes’ Day at a time when its deep meaning and relevance could not be more significant. It provides us with an important moment for reflection and remembering our gallant sons and daughters  for their bravery, courage, resilience and persistence to ensure that today we can enjoy the fruits of freedom and Independence. The life lessons bequeathed to us by our national heroes, whose voices echo so eloquently across the span of time, prepare us for our present challenges.

Their constant reminders to unite as a people to face the challenges that confront us as a nation, are  replayed in our consciousness from generation to generation.Their fixity of purpose, common vision of liberation and focused determination, summon us to find a common cause and it reminds us of the ongoing struggle of ensuring that every Zimbabwean from all walks of life is given the opportunity to fulfil his or her full potential.

At every major moment in our history, when faced with challenges that have tested our individual and collective strength, patience and determination made us stronger and better. There was an overarching ideal which united the struggle of all our national heroes; Freedom from slavery, poverty and subjugation, Freedom to assert our humanity, Freedom to craft our own destiny, Freedom to carve out our own path to nationhood and Freedom to create our own national identity.

Let us recommit on this National Heroes’ Day to respect life, to continue the tradition of our forefathers to promote the freedom and happiness of our fellow Zimbabweans conscious of the challenges and important accomplishments of the past, and hopeful for a brighter future together. Our heritage, indeed, can provide the wellsprings from which we may draw strength.
